Amanda Stincheum, 56, American, did not turn up at the B&B she had booked in Annat, Torridon for Thursday and Friday nights (17th - 18th June). It was thought that she intended to walk from Strathcarron. The landlady informed the Mountain Rescue Team on Saturday morning.
Police and Mountain Rescue could find no trace of her having been in the Strathcarron area. However, at 5.15 pm the Mountain Rescue discovered that she had faxed her route from SYH Inverness to SYH Torridon, where she was to stay on Saturday.
Good police work confirmed that she got off the train at Achnashellach unmanned station at 10.19 am Thursday.
9 members of Torridon Mountain Rescue Team with 3 dogs searched the 17 km paths from Achnashellach, Glen Carron to Annat, Torridon. They were joined by 8 members of Kinloss MRT who had been on exercise at Kintail, as well as a helicopter from Lossiemouth.
She was found by the helicopter at 10.15 in fading light and poor weather less that 2 km from Annat, lost and disorientated, uplifted and flown to Broadford Hospital. She was unhurt, cold, wet and lucky to have survived two nights on the hills.
