Strathcarron, Wester Ross IV54 8YX
Twenty acres of old rhododendrons, woodland walks and exotically planted water gardens.
this year. A bridge over a waterfall with beautiful views of the sea and
hills.
It
was the Baron Schroder in the late nineteenth century who started the
gardens at Attadale. he planted rhododendrons, azaleas and specimen trees
from the wet west coast of North America and Chile, and from the East.
During the war years the garden became neglected and overgrown. Then storms in the 1980's destroyed thousands of trees and revealed old paths, walls and steps lost in the undergrowth for nearly fifty years.
The
hill and steep cliffs to the north, and closeness of the Gulf Stream, have
made it possible to develop almost sub-tropical water gardens where the
old mill stream ran down the drive. Black pools reflect the brilliant
colours of candelabra primulas, iris and meconopsis and a little waterfall
splashes between rocky banks covered in ferns, gunnera and clumps of
bamboo and willow.
We have also restored the old formal sunken garden, as well as the kitchen and herb gardens.
On the A890 between Strathcarron and South Strome. Or come by train to Attadale station (on the Inverness - Kyle line) just 500 yards from the entrance.
