The White Cottage is a traditional highland croft cottage, situated in the main street in Lochcarron, with a beautiful view across the loch to the hills beyond. It is set slightly above street level, with a flight of stone steps leading up to the front door. It has a paved terrace in front of the cottage, surrounded by a low stone wall which makes a sheltered sitting out area, looking out over the loch.
Although the cottage has been fully modernised, a number of the traditional features have been retained. The bedrooms still have the original coombed ceilings, dormer windows and painted pine-lined walls, while the living and dining room has deep window sills and traditional sash windows.
Ground floor: The front door opens directly into the large living and dining room which stretches across the whole width of the cottage, with an open fireplace at the living room end. Colour television with video. Radiators at each end of the room.
Kitchen: Quarry tile floor. Pine floor & wall units with tiled worktops. Electric cooker (4 hobs, double oven) microwave, dishwasher and fridge. Central heating boiler.
Bathroom: The stairs to the bedrooms and bathroom lead up out of the sitting room, and the bathroom is halfway up the stairs towards the back of the cottage. Bathroom has bath, shower, toilet and washbasin -airing cupboard, heated towel rail (runs off the hot water system) and a wall electric heater.
Upper Floor: Two bedrooms - one with double bed, and one with two single beds. Both bedrooms have plenty of hanging and drawer storage space, and each room has a radiator off the central heating system.
Utility Room: This is situated at the side of the cottage, entrance being via the side gate from the terrace. Washing machine, tumble drier, laundry sink, deep freeze, ironing board and iron.
Facilities :
Lochcarron has a branch of the Bank of Scotland, a Post Office, butcher's shop, licensed grocer, gift shops, local potteries and the Lochcarron Weavers. Larger shops can be found at Dingwall (50 miles) and Inverness (63 miles).
There are two local garages and petrol stations in the village. The village has two hotels with restaurants, and the Carron Restaurant on the far side of Loch Carron is about four miles away. There are also hotels at Applecross, Shieldaig and Torridon, and the Gairloch and Lochalsh areas offer the choice of several hotels and restaurants when touring round the area.
Lochcarron has a golf course - fishing permits are available, as is boat hire in the area - if you enjoy walking, there are some large-scale maps of the local area in the cottage.
Lochcarron makes a good touring centre - to the north lie the Applecross peninsular, the Torridon hills, Gairloch with its golf course and sandy beaches, Inverewe gardens etc. - all providing interesting and varied day tours. Southwards lie Lochalsh where you can cross over to the Isle of Skye from Kyle, Glen Shiel, Loch Hourn and Mallaig, the road over Mam Ratagan to the brochs at Glenelg and Arnisdale, and nearer at hand the village of Plockton.
The train journey from Strathcarron (3 miles) to Inverness or Kyle is most spectacular and gives everyone a chance to enjoy the scenery.
